As a matter of fact, when I watched the trailer for it, I had to double check online to make sure this wasn't an adaptation of a more obscure series. The creators get mad points for that. So, at its core, Vulkaiser is a horizontal bullet hell shooter. Coolio. In keeping with its theme of retro anime mecha, your core mech is equipped with a standard, but weak, vulcan cannon. A charge meter at the bottom of the screen constantly fills up as you shoot: activating it fires off a more powerful shot. In addition to your core mech there are four other parts to the Vulkaiser that you can combine with during each stage, each with its own unique weapon. A cluster of missiles, a close-range drill, a weak but screen-filling spread shot, and a wide electric attack. The idea of mixing and matching your mech on the fly reminds me of an older NES shooter, Mag Max, although Vulkaiser is more fleshed out. With all of its various mech parts and special weapon gauges, is Vulkaiser worth playing? Yes. I was able to beat the game in my first attempt without dying. I came close by the end, and two of my partners had to bail a la Starfox, but it was doable. But what's cool are the multiple levels of diffculty. Too easy your first playthrough? Crank it up a level. I can see myself coming back to this in the future to try out the harder diffuculties. Is Vulkaiser the best shooter I've ever played? No. But it's certainly fun and what it lacks in depth in makes up for in style. Totally worth a buy if you're a fan of the genre or of classic mecha anime. Rick Hunter would be proud.. This is the most 70s anime thing I have ever seen and it's beautiful. It's fast, it's exciting, and the four different difficulties mean normal people (like me!) can actually have a shot at beating it. I also really dig the combining system, gives the game a bit more weight with that added decision making. It's short, but something you can alway come back to and have a blast with. Highly recommended, unless you are just the worst at shoot-em-ups and bullet hells, even more so than me.. Astro Port is always surprising us with simple but adictive games. Vulkaiser is not an exception. A lovely homage to the 80's anime of giant robots, with that esthetic emuled by the design, graphics and music. This game promises good hours shooting ships over the cities, avoiding bullet hells, fusing robots and discovering super powers on partys with only one lifebar. Like a classic arcade. Enjoy it!. Seriously, I can't stop smiling during the 20 minutes (will definitely increase in the future) I played this, this game is hilarious. A quality shmup inspired by 70s anime, courtesy of the extremely talented doujin developer ASTRO PORT.. Funny litle shmup game thats clearly inspired 70s giant robot anime shows.Game itself is realy well simply made .Gameplay mechanic is very tight (darius, thunder foce comes to mind)Very talented developersIts very short game. (like 15 min) but game will whoop your♥♥♥♥♥even on normalsimply fun to play.cons - Pause button ingame doesnt exist .No options/resoultion/graphic settings (thats not that big deal since game uses low res 2d graphics and very simple controls). A great little arcade shooter well worth the asking price. Supercharged Robot Vulkaiser is a short bullet hell shooter that parodies the 70s giant robot anime genre. Vulkaiser only has five levels but it's an addictive game with great presentation and replay value. You take control of the titular Vulkaiser and it's pilot Takuya Akatsuki dodging bullets and blasting waves of enemies as you defend earth from androgynous alien invader General Roz. Vulkaiser can combine with four other vehicles developed by Professor Amamori and piloted by Takuya's allies, each one offering Vulkaiser new attacks, knowing when to choose which unit becomes part of Vulkaiser's strategy as you deal with the varying threats the alien menace poses. This is a great indy title from Japanese developer Astro Port and at it's budget price can't afford to be missed, arcade gamers and bullet hell fans alike will love it. definitely pick it up.. Supercharged Robot Vulkaiser is a really fun game even though I'm not too big of side scrolling bullet genre. As a big mecha fan I really enjoyed the homages to the different super robots of the 70s with their bright colours and funny looking enemy designs. That being said the game itself is quite short but that doesn't stop it from being fun.The game consists of four levels of difficulty and the option of playing the launch mode straight away or practice mode where you can access all six levels and get used to the level before trying it on the launch mode. An interesting feature with this game is that bullets are able to hit your hands and feet without you taking any damage, Vulkaiser's chest is your hitbox and as long as it doesn't hit an enemy blast you won't lose health. You have the option to combine with four different types of support units or face the enemies alone with the base Vulkaiser and its rocket fists. Be careful though, if your support unit is destroyed during a stage it cannot be repaired. My personal favorite is the Lightning unit since it can clear mass swarms of enemies and is great for boss fights. Some things that the game can add to make it better include:-A pause button, something that can really help since you're forced to play the whole six levels in one go.-An options menu, this is a big one since there's no guide to the control keys. Luckily I played the Satazius demo and learned the keys from that but if I went in blind, I'd be absolutely lost in terms of controls.-Additional levels or the choice to choose levels after being defeated. Whilst the game is short it is a bit frustrating to hit the last boss and be forced back to the first level and go through everything again before getting back to the boss.I'm a big mecha fan and if you enjoy side shooters and giant robots then this game is for you. It's short and sweet but something about it makes me want to keep shooting away at hordes of enemy robots and their retro design.. An extremely short (6 stage) but fun filled romp. There's little to no story. I guess you can keep using the same one of four units over and over for each stage JUST to see what they say, but other than that the story is super simple and 70's esque. Its a fun nostalgia fest.As for the gameplay, it was challenging. If you are new to shmups, easy will feel like "hard mode".It involves using 4 unique power ups: drill, thunder, rocket, and needle. Each one with their own strengths, weaknesses, uber moves, and "mini uber", which is activated by letting go of the fire button when the "charge" is filled up. The way the shooting has a charge meter adds a nice rhythm to the shooting, with each unique charge filling up once every 3 seconds or so. Its a nice unique way to add a small gameplay dimension to the shooting instead of the usual "hold down fire and aim the ship".Is this game a masterpiece? Heavens no. Is this game worth the price, ESPECIALLY on sale? Definately.
